China Three Gorges Europe is a clean energy generation company, belonging to China Three Gorges Corporation, the largest clean energy group in China and the largest hydropower company worldwide.

Since 2011, we have been contributing to Europe’s energy transition and decarbonization goals by investing in a number of leading clean energy generation platforms in various countries in the region, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Poland, the UK and Greece.

Currently, China Three Gorges Europe has over 75 employees, distributed throughout the company’s various offices and centers in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece and Luxembourg.

Our team is made up of a very diversified group of professionals, from many different countries, with complementary profiles and extensive experience in the renewable energy sector, focused on cross-border acquisitions primarily in Europe.

In 2021, China Three Gorges Europe established its new headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

Our Story so far

2011

China Three Gorges established its European subsidiary in 2011, when the company decided to acquire a 21% stake in Energías de Portugal (EDP), becoming a key strategic shareholder and partner of the Portuguese energy company. 

2012

CTG Europe took an additional 49% stake in EDPR (Portugal), a subsidiary of the Portuguese group which controls an onshore wind portfolio with a capacity of around 649.4MW in the country.

In the same year, China Three Gorges Europe began construction of a solar photovoltaic plant in Greece, with an 18MWp capacity.

2016

China Three Gorges Europe acquired an 80% stake in German renewable company WindMW, which owns a 288MW offshore wind energy farm off the coast of Germany named Meerwind.

2018

CTG Europe entered the UK energy market for the first time through the acquisition of a 10% stake of the 950MW Moray East offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland.

2020

CTG Europe took over a solar portfolio from Spanish company X-Elio’s totalling 572MW. This marked the company’s entrance into Spain.

2021

China Three Gorges Europe acquired a 400MW renewable energy portfolio from Corporacion Masaveu in northern Spain. The predominantly wind energy portfolio includes a 4MWp solar installation in La Rioja.

In 2021, the company officially established its headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

2022

CTG Europe took over a 181MW onshore wind portfolio from EDP in Spain.

The business added two additional dportfolios in the country: the 104.MWp solar photovoltaic Belvis portfolio from Aldesa and the 619MW solar PV Roadrunner portfolio from Nexwell.
